Professor of Botany, founder of the field of restoration ecology in the Czech Republic, author of about 400 papers in the field of restoration ecology, vegetation succession, ecology of river floodplains and invasive ecology. Member of the European Committee of the Society for Ecological Restoration till 2016, founding member, member of the International Association for Vegetation Science; Honorary member of the Slovak Botanical Society, President and Honorary member of the Czech Botanical Society. Coordinating editor of Restoration Ecology (since 1993), member of the editorial board of Preslia, earlier Plant Ecology, Plant Biology, Acta Botanica Fennica, Acta Botanica Hungarica, Folia Geobotanica. Member of the organizing committees of several European Conferencies on Ecological Restoration (main organizer of one of them) and several International Conferencies on Ecological Restoration.
